No, there are no fines charged on items returned after their due date. Irish libraries stopped charging fines on 1 January 2019 and all previous fines were removed then too.
If you have had something out from the library for a while, we encourage you to return it to any library. There will be no fines to pay, and we are happy to reactivate your membership so you can start using your library again.
The removal of fines is a key aim of the public library strategy Our Public Library 2022: inspiring, connecting, and empowering communities.
The elimination of overdue fines is another way for libraries to encourage people who might not regularly use the library to experience what we have to offer.
Returns and Renewals
No fines does not mean no responsibility. Please return items on time so other library users can borrow them too. You can renew your items online, by phone or in person at your local branch.
You will receive overdue email reminders to prompt you to return items to the library. .
Please return overdue items once you receive an overdue notice. If there is an issue in returning the item, please contact your local library.
If you do not return an item, or contact your library to discuss an overdue item before your third reminder, your card will be temporarily blocked. This means you cannot borrow or renew items, including eBooks and eAudiobooks. Borrowing privileges will be restored when the overdue item is returned, or you have contacted your library.
Reminders
Reminder emails are sent as follows:
- 1 day after due date: Reminder email
- 3 weeks after due date: Reminder email
- 9 Weeks after due date: borrowing privileges temporarily blocked until item is returned, or you talk to someone at your library
You can check if you have overdue items by logging into your online account via your library catalogue.
Replacement Costs
There are no replacement charges for children’s items which have been lost or damaged.
Library members under 18 will not be asked to pay replacement costs.
You will be asked to pay a replacement charge if the item which has been lost or damaged is an adult item. This cost will be calculated as the purchase price of the item.
Replacement charges can be paid at any library branch, regardless of where the item originated from.
